Before You Buy Chitosan, A Few Tips

Chitosan has been very popular for years now. It is now being marketed as a product used for weight loss as this is a special fiber that binds fat in the intestines and blocks the absorption of fat by the body. It has been called a ‘fat magnet’ by many researchers today because of its functions.

Chitosan is extracted from chitin, which is a polysaccharide that is present in the exoskeletons of shellfish like lobsters, shrimps and crabs. The main thing that has to be remembered is that though chitin and chitosan are natural fibers and are very effective for losing weight, it is very important to know that all trials that have been conducted have not been successful in conclusively proving the efficiency of the fiber in weight loss programs.

If you are intending to buy chitosan then you must remember certain tips before you go to a nearby health store to get some. You must have ample knowledge about chitosan and find out whether it is effective and safe as there are many dietary supplements that remain questionable. A lot of research has shown that chitosan by itself is not good enough for losing weight - it must be accompanied by exercise and a proper diet.

In a study that was conducted with 250 adults, some of who consumed 3 grams of chitosan every day and the others placebos for a period of 24 weeks, the people who consumed chitosan lost more weight than those taking the placebo. However, the general effects were not very prominent. The chitosan group lost 0.9 pounds on an average when compared to the placebo group that gained about 0.4 pounds.

Before buying Chitosan, the first thing to be noted is that small changes were observed in the LDL cholesterol levels and no prominent differences between the groups was found regarding waist circumference, body index mass, blood pressure and quality of life.

Apart from collecting literature about chitosan, ask people whom you know for recommendations or people who have already taken chitosan before you buying it for yourself. Get advice from the health store but don’t follow the advice blindy. The best way is to ask for advice from a health professional before buying chitosan and taking it.

Pay careful attention to the label. Before buying chitosan, listen to what the retailers have to say about the product. They usually don’t go beyond what is on the label and don’t make false claims. If you have bought chitosan then just read and follow the directions mentioned on the label. Do not go beyond the directions. Consult your doctor and ask for recommendations that pertain to the right usage.

The bottom line is to educate yourself and be well versed with all the facts related to chitosan. Also be aware that the effectiveness of chitosan when it comes to losing weight has not yet been proven. There are a lot of researches that are still being done to support the claims of chitosan, hence it is very important to have a good knowledge about the product and the background before you decide to plunge in and try it.
