Adverse Effects Of Chitosan

Chitosan also known as chitin has become the new fad for losing weight. Before using these products it would be wise to know something about it. Chitosan is the unique fiber found in crustaceans like shrimps, prawns, crayfish, lobsters, squid and crabs. This non-digestible fiber is said to be a fat eliminator and weight loss miracle and is a supplement taken with meals.

Certain clinical studies claim that the chitosan-produced weight loss is due to chitosan’s unique ability to bind fat molecules within the digestive system, thus preventing this bound fat from being absorbed by the body and later eliminating the fat. There are also claims that chitosan lowers blood cholesterol, can be used to treat anemia while improving body strength and the immune system, in addition to controlling the appetite and inducing sleep. Other claims include the use of chitosan in plastic surgery for tissue healing and in treating gum and tooth infections. All this said, the controversy remains about the safety of chitosan use. The pros and cons on the benefits and adverse effects continue. Long-term well defined studies are still lacking and so too a study on the overall long term use of chitosan.

Until lately, no well known studies had shown that chitosan could produce negative reactions and side effects, as all the studies were conducted on animals. These animal studies and some 1999 human subject studies have suggested that chitosan could prevent oil soluble vitamins and certain minerals from being absorbed especially in long term use. Studies have also suggested possible side effects on pregnant women, unborn fetuses and lactating mothers.

Some experts have suggested possible side effects like breathing difficulty, chest pain, feeling tightness around the throat and chest, skin rash and hives, itching, swelling or headaches. There have been reports of swollen palms, wrists and swollen heels. These could also be caused due to allergy, chitosan being a by product of sea food. Some caution that chitosan could cause temporary constipation or act as a laxative due to its high fiber content.

At the slightest or mildest reaction to chitosan, the person must see a physician immediately or better still report to a hospital emergency service, as some mild reactions can quickly develop into life threatening situations. People with seafood allergy must avoid chitosan.

Taking supplements like chitosan must be consulted with a physician as these products could react adversely with other underlying conditions like allergies, heart disease, high blood pressure, blood vascular disorders and pregnancy. It could also react negatively to other medication being taken like blood thinning or clotting medication. Again, overdosing on a supplement could be hazardous as each supplement has a definite recommended dosage within a defined time period. Like all medication, it would be wise not to self medicate with chitosan. It is a relatively new product without long term studies. So consult your doctor and do not exceed the recommended dosage.
